Epilogue

“Have we forgotten anything?” Fenruffle demands of the harried frogs and fish.

“I certainly hope so,” Alice grumbles, eyeing the pile of luggage and pitying the low-ranking pawns-turned-pack mules.

At her side, Mirana just smiles serenely. “There’s no use in protesting. Just let Fenruffle prepare whatever he thinks will be necessary. Otherwise he’ll give himself a stress-injury.”

Alice sighs. She knows it’s the gryphon’s job to ensure that the queen’s household – no matter where that might be – runs smoothly, guaranteeing her comfort. Mirana’s safety, however, is a responsibility that falls to the Queen’s Champion and, as such, where the White Queen goes, so does Alice.

She resists scanning the drive for her Hatter. They’ve already said their good-byes (and rather spectacularly, too!) and she won’t be gone long. Only sixteen days.

SIXTEEN DAYS!

Alice winces at the internal scream of desperation. Since her return to Underland, she’s hasn’t once been away from him for so long.

This is going to be very... trying.

Despite the month of bliss that had followed the finalization of the Thrice a-Vow, Alice can’t help but wish for more time. Just one more lazy, warm afternoon... Just one more moonlit night... Just one more rosy-hued morning...

Alice has to admit: it’s just as well she and Tarrant aren’t of the same species or she might have to have a bit of... small talk with him. Or possibly nominate someone else to protect the queen in her stead for the next year or so... But they’d stayed away from bringing any other rites into the bedroom, so...

Nothing to worry about,
Alice tells herself.

Nothing... except sixteen days without his touch, his infectious giggle, his ever-changing eyes: teasing emerald, affectionate blue, impassioned violet.

She shivers despite the warm morning.

Right – stop this, Alice! You are
working!

After another furious roll call of the prepared and packed supplies, the pawns move forward, gathering the trunks and cases. In that moment of activity – as the queen moves toward her mount – Alice glimpses a flash of dark color. She doesn’t tense when a hand grasps her arm and pulls her behind the cherry tree she’d been standing beneath.

She doesn’t reach for her knife as she stumbles against a warm body. Tarrant leans back against the tree, pulls her against him, and kisses her. Alice lets herself forget about the preparations on the castle drive, the time, the travel itinerary...

His arms are almost bruisingly tight around her. Her hands clutch his vibrant hair with abandon. Their mouths seek, devour...

Let this moment never end... Let Time and the queen and Underland leave us here...

Bit by bit, the kiss gentles to soft touches and sighs. Tarrant’s arms loosen as do her fingers. When his hands are resting on her hips and hers on his shoulders, Tarrant leans his forehead against hers and smiles.

“Ye f’rgot yer Pain Paste,” he whispers.

“And what did you forget?” she asks knowingly.

He giggles. And then: “Alice,” he sighs contentedly, “Why is a raven like a writing desk?”

Alice closes her eyes and inhales the scents clinging to his jacket. She whispers, “I don’t know, Hatter. Why is a raven like a writing desk?”

His voice is husky and low, his breath a caress against her ear. “I haven’t the slightest idea...”

Alice’s entire being suffuses with warmth. Tarrant’s warmth, his concern, his love. As declarations of love go, perhaps it’s unconventional, but then, so are they. Unconventional, but in complete accord.

Leaning away, she grasps his left hand with hers and raises them up so she can see his dark red heart line twisting, twining over his pale skin, so he can see her equally dark blue one.

“Be back before you know it,” she tells him.

His eyes, awash with so many colors she can barely discern them all, focus on hers and he waits.

Relenting, Alice gives him what he seeks, what he needs: “I promise.”

A long breath escapes him. His eyes nearly close and his lips find hers again. This kiss is their farewell, sweet and sad and so sensual she would give anything for one more afternoon, evening, morning spent in bed together...

And then he gently straightens both of them away from the tree and, retrieving something from his jacket pocket, offers it to her on the palm of his hand. Alice chuckles and reaches for the container of healing ointment.

“When ye ge’back, I’ll be checkin’ teh be sure ‘twasn’ needful,” he warns her.

“Then I’d better not get in any fights.”

Tarrant smiles and gently combs his bruised, bandaged, be-thimbled fingers through her once-again-shorter hair.

Letting go of his hand – separating their heart lines – and walking away from him seems like the hardest thing she’s ever done. She can remember doing nothing so utterly contrary to her nature. But she does it: she lets him go; she returns to the procession waiting in drive; she mounts the Bandersnatch.

“Shall we be off?” Mirana asks cheerfully.

“Yes, let’s,” Alice replies, tucking the jar into her bag.

It’s only sixteen days,
she thinks.

“Be back before you know it!”

And because she has to believe in that promise, Alice doesn’t look back... even though she knows he’s standing beneath the boughs of the cherry tree, watching, once again waiting for the moment when his Alice will arrive.

Frankly, this is one of the best pieces of Alice 2010 fic that I've read, period. I adore your version of Hatter--I want to huggle him. Your Alice is wonderful, as well.

One of the things I loved about this whole fic was how you managed to maintain a large cast of supporting characters without having them bog down your story from its main voice and objective--which is v. difficult to do. (Something of which I am guilty myself. I'm a bit like a toddler in writing. I rush off after different characters, shouting, "SHINY!") You didn't do that, and the story flowed much better for it.

The addition of the Lion and the Unicorn as Mirana's suitors during the Wooing Rites was inspired. I believe you drew your inspiration for how the would look from the Tenniel drawing in 'Through the Looking Glass'?

The Jabberwocky and Stayne as the main baddies made great sense in your verse, as well. They were each the ones to inflict the most emotional trauma to your main characters (through their actions, anyways, not by an event beyond control, like the storm at sea) and therefore as Big Bads they were excellent.

This fic made me laugh, it made me cry (yes, actually tears, when Alice said good-bye to her mother. It was when she touched her mother's hair--that reversal of their roles, of Alice being the one looking over her as she slept, as her mother must have done to her as a little girl, really got to me.) and even cheer.

I would love to see you continue this, being the greedy little troll that I am, but either way have added this to my Memories here on LJ and will definietly recommend it to anyone who asks for a good Alice story!!

Oh, my goodness! You finished this a lot faster than I thought you would! And thank you so much for all the fantastic encouragement! I can't say I'm 100% pleased with the way the Jabberwocky and Stayne portions turned out (they seemed a bit too brief to me, but I couldn't bring myself to add words for the sake of length) but I'm glad they worked well!

And, yes, after I saw the film, I ran out to the library and borrowed Carroll's books and read them. The lion and the unicorn are, indeed, from Through the Looking Glass.

I actually wish I had your talent at capturing the essence of minor characters with a single line. From your most recent fiction "Longing Glances" I LOVED LOVED LOVED Mirana sing-songing: "I'll just go away and be... away!" And, of course, you know I ADORED Thackery's licking of the tree. ROTFL!

I also wish Tarrant had turned out a bit nuttier in my story, but I kept reminding myself that here was a man who's conspired for years against the Red Queen and had gotten himself captured by the Red Guard to distract them from finding Alice and... So, not as nutty as I'd hoped! (Whenever I was stuck on a particular part, I'd hop over to your fics and read "Stockings" for inspiration! I love your Hatter!)

Thank you so much for reading and letting me know your thoughts! And THANK YOU for writing such inspiring fan fiction!

You can check my account at http://gtaylor0406.deviantart.com/art/Mind-Touch-163755826. I have a OCC name T'lara a vulcan/human hybid that is Alice's descendant. She is Alice's reincarnation and is sent back by Q to aid Underland. I can't write, but I can write comments and draw the story line. I am Alice/Tarrant supporter. But i like a little twist in the mix. Hopefully i can get a writer to be inspirited to write a fiction.

You need to post your story to fanfiction.net. you will get alot of raving reviews!

We need more smexy Tarrant stories.

You know it it so funny that you had given Tarrant can only have one erection at a time. Time for our Hatter to get some Underland Viagra. LOL

From: [identity profile] manniness.livejournal.com
Viagra... OMG, I just got the most OUTRAGEOUS image of an Underlandian Viagra craze! THAT certainly woke me up! Who needs coffee?! LOL. And, as for why I wrote it that Tarrant could only, erm, perform once... well, I decided to keep my hubby's comments about the whole Alice & Hatter pairing in mind, which was: "But he's OLDER than Alice! A lot!" Of course, I argued back that, in the 19th century, lots of wealthy families paired their young daughters with older, well-established men... So, I defended pairing them up, but I bowed to the age difference. We'll see if that's an... aspect of their relationship that remains static or not. If I write a sequel, that is!

wow that was the greatest story I've ever read
or so it appears to me at this moment

I'm only stunned by this!
And I couldn't stop reading it (I think it took me 6 hours or so o.O)
The only breaks I had where when I was wandering around my room to release some of my excitement about what will happen in the next chapter! (Or for mumbling around: OMG poor Hatter or, poor Alice^^)

Yeah as I said at the beginning: I'm stunned, it's amazing, I love it!

i too would like to see a sequel. this is one of the better alice/tarrant fics out there! so well written and thought out too which is rare for any fandom. you should post them at fanfiction.net you'd get more readers and reviews and that way more people can know of this great story. i've been up all night reading it. couldn't stop. your great for writing suspense and keeping the reader anxious for more as each chapter ending was almost like a cliff hanger. i hope you write more alice/tarrant fics. maybe seeing them raising a family? it'd be SO lovely. i really liked your hatter. he isn't as nutty as in the movie but thats cos he is a man with scars and emotional bruises too like burton intended him to be. i also like your alice though it took me some getting used to cos i've never read one who was so brave, and blunt, and forward but it suits her. and the opposing gender roles of alice/tarrant was funny lol. like him fainting and swooning. would've liked to see their consummation in alice's pov too but overall it was great.

And another fantabuloso review! Thank you!!

I'm sorry reading kept you up all night - I hope you'll be able to function tomorrow and get back on schedule soon!

And you have no idea how utterly THRILLED I am to see you noticed (and liked!) the gender role reversal! I actually didn't intend that when I started writing this story, but my take on Tim Burton's characters seemed to lead them in those directions. The whole "he waits for her" and "she arrives" just sort of spiraled into that role reversal.

I'm currently working through the plot details for a sequel. I hope to finish it because I think it'll be a great conclusion to their story, which doesn't feel "finished" to me... not that it ought to be FINISHED because, in real life, there is no "happily ever after" - there's "and now we keep working to keep things good each and every day"...

Thanks again for reading! Your comments have been an inspiration!

Hello, again! Thank you so much for checking my LJ for updates!

I'm glad you enjoyed the gender role switch. Someone suggested I write the sequel about Alice and Hatter raising a family and my first thought was "Oh, my goodness... How would THAT work?" But now I can totally imagine Tarrant changing diapers, cooking breakfast, taking the kids to school - being Mr. Mom! (Too cute! But, alas, I don't have any plans to put parenthood in the sequel.)

I dearly wish I could write in several languages! I'm studying Japanese, but I don't know if I'll every be able to translate my own stories...

What languages do you speak?

I'm so honored that this was your first A/H fanfic! (It's poetic that we were both AiW firsties - you for reading and me for writing!) I hope you'll find several other excellent fics! Recently, I've really enjoyed work by these LJ users: irisbleufic & wanderamaranth.

Actually, no, I lied. I'm going longer.

I salute you for your awesome twists and originality and for giving me that feeling of, "Aaaw, it's over... but I want to read more..." when I finished it! Which I could not have gone to bed without doing, by the way. Even though I'm tired. 8D

I'm sorry you ended up staying up so late, but I know what you mean about HAVING to finish a fic before bed! (I've seen the other side of midnight plenty times for that very reason!) I hope you can get caught up on sleep soon!

Enjoy the re-read! (I just did so myself today! Found more typos, too. I think they multiply when I'm not looking... like bunnies. Little white bunnies...)

I. . .this. . .and you. . .ok, wow. . .

'Scuse me. My brain just kind of imploded from your Awesome.

I don't even know where to begin on this, 'cause I know once I start - and without even trying - I could easily go on for an extremely long period of time on how much I loved this and nit-pick it to death (in a good way!) with various scenes/characters/writing shticks/etc.

And speaking of writing shticks, while it's right there in the front of my mind: present tense. Through the entirety. Used PROPERLY, with correct usage of past tense where necessary. Someday, I'm gonna be sitting at my desk going over some fourteen-year-old's writing assignment, and I'm going to want to kill someone (quite possibly the student) for the tense butchery, and then I'm gonna think of this fic. And it's all gonna be ok again, because here's hope. Few and far between and glittering with all the pretty of something so incredibly rare and wondrous, but hope all the same that people CAN use present tense properly. You are amazing for that, and that alone is enough to make me love this fic.

But the rest can't be ignored, 'cause oh my word. Your control of the characters is stunning - and Jabber? Shpadoinkle. I love that twist more than is healthy, I must admit. I loved Alice's reaction to 'murdering' Stayne, as well; that, despite knowing who/what he is, she still had a problem killing him. She still hesitated, and that fact tore her up afterwords (and good Lord, Tarrant's whole "Why won't she let me fix her?" bit? Broke my heart). Also: you're whole idea on that riddle being their way of saying 'I love you'? I loved that; so incredibly quirky and them, and utterly adorkable.

Also, on another writing shtick: iambic pentameter. I can't even begin on how much I loved your constant use/referencing of that; my Brit Lit teacher (the class I was first properly introduced to iambic pentameter/poetry styles in) was horrible at explaining it, so my entire class had trouble grasping the subject. It's kind of become an inside joke because of the hell that was Romantic poetry, so I laugh every time I'm faced with it. (The lit prof/geek in me loves it, though - I just get an extra giggle 'cause of the memories. xD)

And I gotta say: in that guddlerish way a lot of ficcers have, I might be sneaking some ideas from you. (Like 'Upland'; I've seen it called a lot of things in fandom (especially since we're never given a definite name in the film/script), from Aboveland to Otherworld and such. I was thinking 'Upperland', and then I read this and am thinking 'Upland' is perfect (I was thinking 'Upper' because it rhymes a bit with 'Under', but just going from the words 'Up' by itself is perfect). So I hope you don't mind that that's locked as fanon for me now. C: )

I'm agreeing with Amaranth 100% here: definitely one of the best fics in this fandom. I'm definitely memming it, and I saw on the masterlist there's to be a book two? Definitely keeping an eye out for it.

You, m'dear, have blown me away. You are definitely one hell of a storyteller.

Oh, my goodness! Where to start?!?! THANK YOU SO MUCH for your review of OPK! It was pure magic to hear from you and know just what tickled your fancy in the story!

As for present tense, I've been writing in present tense (with past perfect referring to earlier memories/events) since I was 21... so, even at that ripe old age, it can be learned and mastered, so don't give up on those teenagers, no matter what! (I actually came upon the idea to write in present tense because that's how I wrote notes in my dream journal, and when one of my original novels - a historical suspense - wasn't turning out the way I wanted, I decided to switch the tense and voila! Although, after the fact, several people told me it was impossible, so I'm glad I tried it before I mentioned it to them, because I LOVE present tense!)

I can't lay claim to "Upland" because I'm sure I read it somewhere before I started using it, but, by all means - spread the love!

And you have no idea how utterly RELIEVED I am that I used iambic pentameter correctly! I majored in philosophy, not literature, and I was just going from a quick and dirty explanation on Wikipedia about it! LOL!

And thank you for letting me know what aspects of the story - plot devices and conversation - you liked! I'm so thrilled you liked the riddle-as-I-love-you... I kinda thought that's what it ended up as by the end of the movie (or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part?) and decided to make it more concrete in the fanfic.

And, yes, I'm working on a sequel. I've been tearing apart Chapter 9 for the last two days as it refuses to cooperate with me, but I know exactly where I'm going with this, and I can't wait to see if I end up surprising myself despite that - so, no worries, I'll finish it!

Thank you AGAIN for reading and reviewing above-and-beyond-the-call-of-duty! I'm sure I'll be looking back over you comments frequently to reassure myself that I CAN write what I want and have it turn out better than "just all right"!

(Just to let you know, since I read parts on FF.net and here, I thought the review deserved to be posted in both places) I am completely in love with your story and the characters that you’ve shaped everyone into being. True you had a template, but you’ve made them into so much more and in such a way that it seems like a natural progression. All the characters have grown and become so much muchier under your skillful fingers that I am so sad to see things end for now. Please know that your story has become a permanent file on my Kindle and I’m sure will be enjoyed over and over again. I also have to say that, even though I’m not really a fan of sexual scenes between Alice and Tarrant, you were able to do it in such a tasteful and beautifully written manor, that I can’t bring myself to mind at all. It was actually one of the best written scenes of that natural that I’ve read in a work of fanfiction. I can’t wait for you to start posting the sequel. Keep up the wonderfully brilliant work!

I'm so glad this site allows comments from non-account holders, because I was just dying to tell you how truly amazing I think this story is.

I wrote a short (but sweet) little one shot myself on the day of the Alice DVD release, as a sort of tribute, and then went looking for other works out of curiosity. I have to say, all others pale utterly in comparison to yours. It was such a thrill for me each time a chapter was posted, and I want to thank you for providing me with such a fabulous read.

I fell in love with Depp's Hatter in the theater, I fall in love whenever I watch the DVD, and I think you've captured his character (and indeed, all the rest as well) spot on, right down to the Scottish accent.

This was everything a good story should be. It ran smoothly, included a variety of elements (action, comedy, romance), was extremely well-written and always tied back to the main concept (that of keeping promises). And all the attention to detail was absolutely gorgeous.

I'm greatly looking forward to reading Book 2, and thanks again for such wonderful work!

I'm slowly wending my way through the AiW 2010 fic and I'm SO GLAD I stopped to read this. It was lovely and very well done. I enjoyed your interpretation of promises and their consequences and the Jabberwocky and the significance of threes. Very well done!

Thank you for sharing! I'm off to read book two now!

Thank you so much for reading! I'm so glad you enjoyed this story! I hope you like Book 2 as much as Book 1. Although, I've heard rumors of periodic kleenex abuse from folks who have already read it... just so you know. (But, don't worry - you won't want to toss yourself off a cliff at the end. I promise!) It just occurred to me that I've spent the entire day reading your story, pausing only for food and to play with my son when he needed my attention, and it was wonderful.

This was a very good day indeed. Thank you!

Wow, one entire day devoted to eating, playing with your son, and reading my book? That's amazing!! Thank you! And I'm so glad you felt it was time well-spent!

And thank you for all your fabulous comments on each chapter! (And the kudos!) (^__~)

When you decide that you've reminisced in Book 1 enough, I hope you'll give Book 2 a try. And I hope you enjoy it as much as Book 1 (although I've heard that a box of tissues will come in handy)!

Until next time! (^__^)/ = waves

Seriously, in a word…wow.

In a great many words than one, that story is so awesomely wonderful--I’m going to take it, print it and start handing out copies so the world can read it. LOL

When I found the story, I was like “Cool! A long Halice story! I’ll upload it to my Kindle and have a few days of reading material.” Dude, I was so wrong. Once I started, I couldn’t put it down! The housework was forgotten and my daughters didn’t get their dinner (just kidding about my daughters, but housework and I don’t really get along, so the distraction was awesome). I had my first reading binge in years.

I’ve been reading fanfic for fifteen years too long I’ve probably read at least 10k stories (probably more). I can honestly say that your story is in the top three that I’ve ever read. It’s just that good.

Your characterization is beyond spot-on. I feel like I know Tarrant, Alice and the others a hundred times more now than I did before reading the story. I worried with Tarrant, I suffered with Alice, I cheered for them as a couple, I sympathized with Mirana, I related to Chess…The evolution of each character was perfect. It was great to see their growth (Chess, I thought, had some particularly wonderful moments.) and development.

The balance of angst, friendship and romance was just fabulous. The transition in Tarrant and Alice’s relationship was believable, not forced, and utterly perfect. (And the idea that the “Why is a raven like a writing desk?“ is their special term/exchange of endearment nearly killed me. Because, again, it’s so freakin’ perfect.)

But what I absolutely loved, Loved, LOVED about the story was the creativeness involved, the mythology of Underland you created: the Wooing Rites, the duties of the Champion, the transformation of the Jaberwocky, and, my personal favorite, the Thrice-A-Vow. (I also loved the coloring of Tarrant’s eyes--they all fit perfectly with each emotion.)

Seriously, it has been years since I found a story that I loved so much. (Surely it is acceptable for one to be smitten with a story…LOL).

Thank you for sharing the story…you’ve made this old-timer fanfic reader do a Futterwacken or two. :D

Oh, my goodness! Thank you very, very much for taking the time (amazing amounts of Time!) to leave such glowing praise for One Promise Kept. When I started writing this, I had no idea of its potential and how warmly it would be received - hearing so never fails to humble and entrance me. So, yes, Thank You!!

I'm a long-time fic reader as well, for a beloved character's story shouldn't be forced to end with the conclusion of the original author's book, movie, or series, should it? Celebrate the Love, I say!

I'm so thrilled you enjoyed so many elements of the story! Although, I *do* wish I'd been able to see your Futterwhacken! I'm sure it must have been Fabulously Wonderful! (^__~)

I hope you enjoy Book 2 whenever you get tired of Book 1 and decide you need More... although I've heard rumors of Kleenex abuse. Just, y'know, to warn ya.

This story was wonderful. I loved your world building and characterizations. All the characters were great, but Mirana, especially, was more real here, and more muchier. In my head, I can still see the same actress playing her, but all of the oddness makes more sense here and makes her more compassionate, and less annoying.

I LOVED the plot in this story. It was epic and lovely. The pacing of the smaller plot points did a great job of creating tension in the story, and the points that you've layed down for the next book are subtle, yet enticing.

Thanks so much for writing!

(I've been waiting for someone to fix the story to this since the first time I saw the movie. I was so disappointed. I liked it, but she should have been MUCHER. You've given the story back its muchness! yay! (so like the Labyrinth, where I was all like, wait . . . why would you leave the hot goblin king again . . . stupid responsibility. sorry, I get side tracked sometimes)).

Hello! Thank you so much for reading and a double thank you for letting me know you liked it!! *hugs* I'm so very happy you enjoyed it!

It warms my heart to hear you really enjoyed Mirana's development. She continues to evolve and get... muchier in the following books so I hope you continue to enjoy her journey!

Well, this is the second time I have read this. First was on Fanfiction & as I was moving on to the second book I decided to see what other stories you whipped up since I loved this one so far & I see your Live Journal link! So I have been reading on and off between here & FF.net mainly because when I need to stop reading to go to class I can bookmark the FF.net page on the part I am at. Anyways~ [sorry for rambling] I'm on Chapter three of book three & decided to take a break from reading & start from the begging to refresh. I have to say, Book One & Two are my most favorites as of now. The drama, action, romance, everything all wrapped into one your books are. Very amazing.

I came across this story when I first started looking for Alice in Wonderland Fanfictions...Like RIGHT after watching the movie...No joke, the credits was just starting & I was looking. Anyways I saw it in a few of my results & I wasn't sure if I was going to read it since usually when people write they lose my interest if they just keep going and going and going...So I started reading one & went to her profile since her story was alright (it killed me to no copy it all, edit it and send it back to her) and looked in her Favorites & there you were again! So I decided 'Okay Fate, I shall read' and gosh am I happy I did! I didn't sleep at all. Just kept on reading & reading...My mind doesn't stay on one thing for long so the fact you was able to do that was famously done.

I loved when Tarrent would get jealous, enraged, mad & the fact Alice always knew how to handle him. My boyfriend is, as one would say, like Tarrent so I understand what Alice went through & how she handled him. Reading Mirana was enjoyable as was Chessur. You really captured each & everyone of the characters & it felt as if I was watching the scenes & not just reading. The whole riddle/I love you I found so~ cute! How something Alice thought was stupid (referring to the Alice in Wonderland book)turned into something she relied on was amazing.

Your writing had me doing many things. Yelling YES while throwing my arms up, asking "Wait, what? Nonono not cool", moving my mouse quickly to get to the next chapter & just plain out re-reading the whole thing. I hardly ever leave reviews, never seeing them worth my time but yours...Deserves to have all readers leave a review; hands-down.

And to end my blabbering all I have to say is congratulations on finishing the four books AND having strength to do a fifth! From all the reviews I read on all your books it looks like I won't be putting this one down anytime soon.

Fairfarren!

P.S. This review will be on your Fanfiction version too, since i have read both ^.^ Good luck with your next book!
